How to download Kindle eBooks with USB
Change due to publisher Penguin's issue with Amazon
Due to the recent decision by big-six publisher Penguin to suspend their agreement with our eBook provider, OverDrive, Kindle format eBooks from Penguin are no longer able to be downloaded wirelessly after checkout.

Sources of Free E-Books on the Internet
Updated 1/4/2012
We've seen a 41% increase in the circulation of e-books at the Baker Free Library over the past year. With more and more Bow residents reading e-books on their e-readers or smartphones, there are sure to be some who would like access to even more e-book content, preferably free of charge. Here's the latest list of sources for free e-books from the July/August 2011 issue of Public Libraries magazine and a November 10, 2011 post from the iLibrarian blog. Please be aware that the quantity and quality of e-books does vary greatly among the sources.
Baen Books (sci-fi and fantasy)
Book Lending (matches lenders and borrowers of Kindle e-books)
BookRix (Over 95,000 new books, ePub format. Some foreign language & audiobooks too)
Digital Book Index (165,000 full-text digital books available)
E-Discover the Classics (quick way to get to classic titles in Project Gutenberg)
Free-eBooks.Net (unlimited access to HTML format; access to 5 e-books/mo in PDF or TXT formats)
Google Books (nearly 3 million free e-books from public domain)
Hathi Trust Digital Library (for use online free; downloading at cost)
Inkmesh (search engine to find free e-books and compare cost of e-books to purchase)
ManyBooks.net (Over 29,000 free eBooks for Kindle, Nook, iPad, and most other eReaders)
Mobipocket (Besides offering thousands of free titles, also offers Mobipocket eBook Reader)
Munseys (offers 20,000 titles in 12 formats)
The Online Books Page (indexing/searching to sites offering free online digital content)
Open Library (part of the Internet Archive)

Kindles and NHDB
Updated 1/5/2012
Since the NH Downloadable Books consortium began offering Kindle-compatible eBooks in September 2011, we've seen a dramatic increase in eBook use and a number of new Kindle devices come on the market. Here's all of the latest instructions we have for using your Kindle with the NHDB service.
For instructions on how to check out one of the NHDB eBooks using your Kindle, click on this pdf document:

Can I listen to MP3 audiobooks from NHDB on my Kindle Touch?
Yes! After you check out the MP3 title on the NHDB web site, download the audiobook to your computer and then drag it into the Kindle Touch's "Audible" folder. The files will show up as chapters which you can then listen to on the device. You can also have the Touch read regular eBooks to you, with either a male or female computer voice.
How to find out if a book on NHDB is Kindle-compatible:
Not all books available through the NHDB site are compatible with the Kindle. The easiest way to find Kindle compatible books on the site is to conduct an advanced search to limit results to Kindle compatible eBooks.
Can I get a NHDB Kindle eBook directly using my Kindle Touch or any e-ink Kindle (without using a computer)?
The short answer is no. The web browser on the Kindle Touch or other e-ink Kindles is too primitive to allow decent web browsing, and on top of that Amazon will not allow public library loans to be acquired this way -- you will be pushed to buy the book from the Amazon site. Best bet is to use a computer to check out the book, and then use the instructions above to transfer the book to your Kindle using a USB cord.
Can Amazon see everything I'm borrowing from NHDB or any of my personal identifying information because I have to log into my Amazon account to get my Kindle NHDB loan?

Where to starts with ebooks? The eReader...
Updated 1/4/2012
There are three basic levels of eReading devices now: a smart phone; and eReader; and a tablet. eReaders include the e-ink Kindles, Nooks, and other brands that are black and white, and work very well in bright light. The tablets include the Kindle Fire, the Nook Color Tablet, and the iPad, among others. All tablets have screens that are similar to a computer screen, which does make them difficult to read in bright light.
The following link to an article on cnet.com provides an up-to-date comparison of the various tablets currently available:
